Iowa Bound/Trip to Elkhorn

It was time for our annual trip to Iowa - I was NOT looking forward to the long drive since I had just been home a little over a week from my OK trip!  But I had checked flights and they were really high so once again, I crawled in the car and we headed out!  We left at 5:20am (but hooray for the sun that comes up early now) and got between W. Pk and Divide when a bull elk ran out of the trees right in front of us!  Glenn slammed on his brakes and everything went flying BUT he got stopped in time!  WHEW - not the way I wanted to start the trip!

But the trip was pretty much uneventful except for the fact of a semi pulling out in front of me in the fast lane as I was just ready to pass him..........there were plenty of semis on I-80 as usual and LOTS of construction which we always expect in the summertime!

Patty had drinks and appetizers for us as we walked in the door!!  And later yummy burritos!

The next day started the reunions and the relatives!!  Although there was construction where we were headed, we just had to take a round about way to get to Onawa to meet granddaughter Nedelle and her boyfriend Brandon - they live together in Norfolk, NE and were home for the weekend!

We took them to lunch at Frannie's, one of the oldest and best cafes there - it was fun to catch up with them!

On the way home, we passed two of these sprayers - they remind me of something from Star Wars!

After getting back to Patty's, Glenn took a quick nap and then headed to Beebeetown for his class reunion - the class had decided a few years ago to start having reunions every 2 years since everyone was getting old and they have lost a few classmates - he had a great time catching up with everyone!

Patty and I just relaxed and I think took a ride through town on their golf cart!

The next day Glenn was heading out about 11:00 to meet up with his 2 sisters and brother and they were all heading to the All School Class Reunion which is held every year in Mondamin!  Again he enjoyed it and of course saw LOTS of people he knew - but unfortunately not a great meal!

Patty and I had decided to head to Elk Horn for the day - Iowa has a few trolls now and since Elk Horn was only an hour away, we decided to head there!  And yes, we have the same taste in clothes - check out our tops!

It was rainy on the way over but later had plenty of sunshine - we stopped at a Danish bakery to have goodies and coffee - quite small inside - the coffee was delicious and the Danish pastries were really good.

Elk Horn is a Danish town and this windmill was brought over in pieces from Denmark in the 70's!  The town helped construct it piece by piece - we took the tour and it was really interesting!!

After the lady told us all the details, we were free to wander around the actual mill and climb up to see things - the stairs were super steep!!

And then there was another set of stairs with NO RAILING on the one side - I did crawl up there but told Patty not to - it was rather scary!!

There was a really nice gift shop attached that we browsed through and then walked down to a replica of a Viking house!

Outside was this miniature church - cute as can be!!

The inside was darling!

And check out the tiny pews!

Then we were off to see the troll!
